Seattle

We woke up one day on the coast of Oregon and went.. "want to go to seattle? yep definately"

so we took off, drove straight to west seattle where justin's cousin Huston lives. We got there and met a few of huston's friends and his girlfriend chelsa. We ended up going to a underground dive bar to play pool but ran into another friend of Huston's and ended up going to his apartment complex which I think is ancient. the rec room there was a relic of the 1950s complete with the old instruction manual for the billards table, in mint condition in its 1950s splendor. random instruments of workout destruction were strewn about, with a old vibrating belt workout machine and weird ab roller things laying around and strange pre bow flex devices attached to the wall. we ended up playing team cutthroat pool and darts. halarity ensued and we had a great time before heading back to hustons to pass my drunken ass out on his couch.

the next day justin and I headed downtown to meet his friend dave and hang out on queen anne for awhile. we ended up getting electric iced teas and then headed to the biggest asian market i've ever seen. this place was a zoo, I wished neal was there to help translate the many japanese packages and products. we explored the store until we came upon the fish area and proceeded to get a bunch of seafood for the seafood cookout at hustons. we got muscles, clams, prawns and salmon. the feast was excellent, huston grilled the salmon and I grilled some aspargus (which I need to do for my parents as it tastes way better than steaming it!) and he steamed the muscles, clams and shrimp as well as potatoes and onions and other goodies and then we put wax paper down on the table and dumped it out. it was a crazy feast in the middle of the table.

the next day we headed to Vashon Island where justin's uncle and cousins live. Vashon is an entry all in itself and I'm still here at the moment. I'll have to update this later about Vashon and the rest of the seattle journey as I dont have time to write it all out right now.

Yachats and Neptune Beach, Oregon

I woke up this morning in a forest fit for elves. the air was chilly and strange birds sung morning melodies from unseen heights. I threw on double layers of clothes and emerged from the tent to the morning light peeking through the canopy of massive pine trees. green moss dripped from the branches and enveloped these ancient giants.

my only thought was.. "I could get used to this."

Its weird camping in a forest where the sun doesn't touch your tent until ten in the morning, where it remains in the 60s most of the day in the middle of summer. where you are 700 feet from the ocean and yet in the middle of what looks like a scene from the ewok forest in star wars. Its surreal, beautiful, awe inspiring, and makes you want to stay forever.

we woke up and fired up the Coleman stove to cook some hot water for coffee and granola and blueberries (hippies I know) then it was time to break camp which we have gotten damn good at by now. dishes washed, camp packed up and hauled to the car then tetris time as we squeeze every possible inch of space out of the honda. we keep reorganizing the car in an attempt to find the most efficient way to operate in the limited confines. In the last 5 thousand miles we have definitely tried a bunch of different strategies and we are finally getting into a groove that works well.

Last night as the sun fell we went to Neptune beach for the last time. Its this beautiful beach tucked away under the small ocean tourist trap of Yachats. the beach has black lava rocks coagulated all over the shore in large climbable clumps that have various sized pools on the top teeming with ocean life, from anemones to crabs and little fish. the beaches are white and the tides roll in nice and easy with gulls winging low over the rocks.

Its the kind of place you could spend hours at. A river flows under a bridge and into the ocean right there, and that same river is about 200 feet from our campsite though the trail to it is an adventure in itself as you end up twisting and turning around ferns that are 5 feet tall and shrublike, and down little gullies.. kind of reminds me of fern gully actually only not animated.

Oregon is one of those amazingly beautiful places that you can see a million pictures of and never appreciate until you are out in the middle of no where surrounded by it, and going.. wow. a small veloceraptor could run by and I wouldn't be surprised.

we woke up today and decided to go to seattle. not that we needed a change of scenery but its friday and we felt like going to a city and portland wasnt an option since Justin's friend patrick who lives there is in seattle himself, so we are going to the cyberpunk city itself and I'm excited.

we crossed over into washington and I pulled over, having driven about 200 miles today, and we swapped, so now I'm blogging as Justin is driving (hooray for offline blogging tools, muhahaha)

Seattle in 123 miles! we are stoked! first thing when we get there we want some good fucking fish and chips! we got ripped off in Yachats, never go to the drift inn, that place is a rip off and the food isnt that great.

well thats all for now, I'll be writing plenty about seattle I'm sure

keep it goan, never slowin, always growin

Last night in Eugene

So we roll into Eugene mid afternoon and find a nice little coffee shop downtown called Gary's Coffee which has free wifi and great joe. We hung out most of the afternoon there waiting for Chuck to get off work. Free from the bounds of work, we went to Sam's Garage for some dank veggie eats and dollar PBRs (yep arkies fit right in here in eugene). We went back to chucks to drink beer and shower (it had been about four days for me, and after bush wacking our way up one of the sisters mountains, I had aquired a nice layer of ingrained dirt)

clean again for the first time in awhile, we rolled back to sams to check out the bluegrass night they had going on. I was pleasantly suprised at who showed up for the bluegrass jam there were about six to eight musicans who rotated in and out playing a variety of instruments and all of them were really good. Justin was in heaven listening to the bluegrass and I ended up meeting a whole team of roller girls who were friends of Chuck. They were a hell of a riot and kept the night interesting. I mainly hung out with Des, a hippie from LA sporting dready buns and a familiar smile. It turns out she was the most hardcore on the team, though honestly, you'd never of guessed it. She had a laundry list of injuries she had incured over the years of roller derby, broken ankle, broken wrist, torn ACL, this girl had been through the wringer, and still she was grinning and stoked to start another season of thrashing about in a mini skirt.

As the night wound down my intoxicated ass decided to invest in a piece of pizza and sobered up enough to go back to chucks and pass out. All in all I had a blast in Eugene and ended up spending more than I had aloted, but thats how life goes. I'll be munching on ramen and boil in a bag meals for a minute to try to catch up on my funding alotment but c'est la vie.

today we are heading west on highway 126 twords the coast and whatever waits in store for us there. I'm excited as always about the adventure and looking forward to eat some seafood, preferably on the cheap!

well thats all for now, I'll transcribe my trip journal later. keep it goan

Trip Journal Eugene

After a full day on the road we arrived in Eugene, exhausted and glad to be somewhere nice. Chuck my friend from numerous psy excursions was nice enough to put us up for the night and took us to a house party where the DJ was using regular CD players (ie walkmen) and a mixer to play electro house. the next day Chuck and Christian (his girl and a friend of mine from back home), Justin and I set off in search of Couger springs, a fabled hot spring up near the cascades.

After a much needed soak in the springs we opted for free camping up the road in what turned out to be one of the most perfect spots imaginable. A long nutty night ensued before saying goodbye to chuck and christian in the morning. Justin and I stayed and decided to finally get our asses hiking!

we headed further east to Sisters Oregon, nestled in the cascades and found a suitable waterfall hunt to embark on. Backroads and scary rocky roads later, we arrived at a dusty trail leading to a waterfall that is better described as a raging river plumeting off a huge mountain. Justin decided we had to summit the mountain so when the trail ended we plodded on up a steep shaley mountain to the barren top where we saw the river before it hurls itself off the mountain.

Spectacular barely describes this one! the trip down was nerve wracking but we made it! on the way home we hopped on another trail to see the head of the mckensie river where it emerges from a mountain into the most blue pool I've ever seen! the hike there is through a majestic old growth forest that has trees dripping with green moss.

God oregon is BEAUTIFUL!

Trip Journal [recap] The Smoke Madness

We noticed the smoke around reno, as it started to replace the sky. by truckee we were in the thick of it. we wrapped wet bandanas around our faces and plowed through the never ending white fog. Exhuastion had passed somewhere in the doldrums of nevada and adrenaline and adderall were the only things keeping us going now. Hopes of camping in northern cali were quickly becoming thier own nightmare. The town of Nevada springs california, a overly quaint gold rush town turned tourist trap, harbored our exhausted bodies in its air conditioned old time cafe. Hopes of a room at a nearby yoga retreat peaked my interest, but the reality turned out to be disappointing. tangled up in windy mountain roads we finally found the krishna-esq compound, only to be told that its $55 a night to CAMP and that didnt even include the yoga program!

with that we high tailed it back to town even further depleted. Throats raw from the smoke inhalation and delerium setting in, we plodded on quite accidentally to sacremento, where my mother graciously reserved a motel room for us at the motel 6. we cracked out on TV and internet before finally passing out after 38 hours of uptime.

the next day we B-lined up Interstate 5 to oregon witnessing fires ranging in shasta on the way.

its the only time I've ever wanted to leave california, and I found myself saying the mantra of fuck cali the whole way out.

what a fucking inferno!

Trip Journal July 9th 2008 (wyoming)

we woke up in Wyoming in the most beautiful place in the middle of nowhere. The wick/beumee wildlife management area which is off interstate 80. the camping is free and the place is a dry hill scape with deermules, prairie dogs, and long tailed field mice in abundance. Large daisys and other wildflowers are EVERYWHERE! More than a few times I felt like a pioneer crossing into oregon drinking coffee to keep out the 40 degree weather and wind chill. The campsite nestled into a spot about ten feet away from a babbling brook where trout jumped in the early morning light. If it weren't for the mosquitoes I would say this place is perfect, maybe a little too dry and bitter cold part of the year but definitely worth revisiting.

6:20 pm: we are well on our way to the utah border and hope to see the salt flats before dark. I cant help but wonder if my VAX is still there from 2004 on route to the rainbow gathering in northern cali.

(after note: it was too dark to see so I didnt locate the vax, also this entry is a typing of my journal that I wrote at the time which explains the chronological angle.. though I will be catching up and then everything will be in order.)

On the road

So starts the blog, the second part of the content that accompanies any worth while adventure into the unknown. the necessary scribbling of a madman in search of... something.

I have been back logging in my journal, intent on eventually posting the musings to the web, and I will, when time permits, put it all up for the internet meme to assimilate.

thus marks the beginning of the nomadic adventure of 2008.. the trip to vaxinate america and return with a new perspective and a new lease on life.. or at least a few amazing places ticked off my internal list of must see before I die.

It all started in Iowa with one hell of a party and where it will end.. who even knows?

for now, I'm blissed out in Eugene Oregon in a coffee shop, feeding both of my addictions and starting something tangible to record the visceral experience of the rest of this month on the road.

stay tuned nutters, you are vicariously in for a wild ride!

peace love and dooooooofin
